Why Seek Braces Treatment with a Dental Clinic that Prioritises Non-Extractions
Braces are not just about aesthetics. They have long-term impact on our oral and systemic health after orthodontic treatment.
An orthodontic dental clinic that prioritises your teeth can help you preserve your natural teeth while achieving your desired outcomes.
Preserve natural tooth structure
Keeping teeth whenever safely possible avoids removing healthy tooth structure purely to “make space.”
This supports long-term function and reduces irreversible decisions made too early.
Enhance facial harmony and jaw growth
Braces treatment is not just about straight teeth.
It is actually about shaping the entire lower face.
Reducing extractions supports healthy jaw growth. This improves facial balance, symmetry, and can even positively impact breathing.
Prioritises stability and comfort
When space is created thoughtfully, alignment can be achieved with better bite harmony and potentially lower relapse risk.
This is because teeth are positioned within a more appropriate arch form.
Your Braces Treatment Journey @ kohe™ Dental
Initial Consultation
At kohe™ Dental, we seek to educate each patient before making the final decision on what orthodontic treatment should be done.
During the discovery consultation, we focus on your concerns and help you to find a suitable treatment that will fit your desired treatment outcomes and budget.
You will be given a clear and concise treatment plan that you can refer to. This treatment plan will include a transparent cost breakdown of your entire braces treatment.
We will also conduct a thorough assessment of your current oral health condition to see whether you require further general dentistry work done before taking up braces treatment.
Should you wish to proceed with treatment, we will also take your diagnostic records (e.g. your OPG and Latceph X-rays).
3D Digital Scan (No Gooey Impressions)
Once you have completed your diagnostic scans, we will do a 3D intraoral scan of your teeth.
These records help us to track your before and after progress.
It will also help us map out an accurate treatment plan for your braces journey.
At kohe™ Dental, we are a fully digital orthodontic and dental aesthetics clinic. This means that we do not use physical impressions for any of our dental work, which increases the accuracy and precision of our dental care.
Thorough Dental Cleaning with Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT)
A thorough dental cleaning is done with Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT) before your braces fitting.
GBT is a gentle and non-invasive dental cleaning procedure that removes plaque and calculus gently without contact.
Dental cleanings are done before the braces fitting to ensure that you have optimal oral hygiene before placement of your braces brackets.
Doing so prevents the build up of calculus and plaque and ensures you do not have dental caries during your braces treatment.
The dental cleaning can be scheduled on the same day as your braces fitting visit.
Braces Fitting
The braces fitting process is usually done in 45-60 minutes.
During the braces fitting procedure, an etching agent will be placed on your teeth to bond the brackets securely to your teeth surface.
Progress Reviews and Adjustments
Once you have bonded on your braces brackets, it is not over!
You will need to return every 4-5 weeks for regular reviews and adjustments until treatment is completed.
How To Avoid Extractions Before Braces
For children below the age of 12
Invisalign Palatal Expander
An modern take on the traditional palatal expander.
The IPE is an orthodontic expander that uses clear aligner-style aligner staging together with a palatal expander component.
It is designed to widen the upper jaw while improving transverse width with better comfort and hygiene.
For children below the age of 12
Traditional Palatal Expander
A fixed upper-jaw expander that is cemented to the back teeth (usually molars/premolars) and activated over time to widen the upper arch. It is most commonly used in growing kids where the midpalatal suture is more responsive.
Great for creating space and correcting crossbites and narrow arches. Helps prevent surgery.
For teenagers above the age of 13 and adults
MARPE (Miniscrew-Assisted Rapid Palatal Expander)
A hybrid expander anchored partly by temporary miniscrews in the palate, designed to achieve more skeletal expansion in older teens and adults where the suture is less responsive.
MARPE aims to reduce unwanted tooth tipping compared with purely tooth-borne expanders and can be an option to avoid or reduce the need for more invasive surgical expansion in selected cases.
Expand your palate to reduce unnecessary extractions* Subject to suitability. Assessed on a case by case basis.

Am I suitable for non-extraction orthodontics?
You are suitable for non-extraction orthodontics if your intention is to avoid extractions as much as possible and you fall under either one or a combination of the following:
- High palate that has resulted in a narrow palate;
- Are moderately overcrowded and has space for expansion or distalization;
- Has gaps between teeth that allows for expansion and movement of misaligned teeth.
You will not qualify for non-extraction orthodontics if you already have a broad palate and extremely overcrowded teeth. In such cases, it will not be suitable to do further expansion or avoid extractions as the palate will no longer be able to expand.
Can I avoid extractions entirely before my braces treatment?
Yes and no.
It is possible to avoid extractions if you have one of the following:
- Gaps between teeth that allows for teeth to shift during orthodontic treatment;
- A narrow palate that allows for expansion between orthodontic treatment;
- Sufficient space after Interproximal Reduction (IPR) or distalization;
- Have had previous extractions done that allows for teeth movement.
Do I really need to remove my wisdom teeth before braces?
Not always.
You might not need wisdom teeth removal if they are not causing problems and your orthodontic plan does not rely on that space. Many people finish braces/clear aligners with wisdom teeth still present.
Removal is more likely needed when:
A wisdom tooth is impacted (stuck) or damaging the tooth in front.
There is existing infection, decay, gum disease, or recurring pain/swelling.
It’s hard to keep clean and likely to cause future issues.
Your braces dentist needs distalisation/space control at the back, or the wisdom teeth will interfere with moving molars.
The key point is that wisdom teeth do not automatically “ruin” braces results. Post-braces shifting is usually about natural drift and retainer wear, not wisdom teeth.
To make the best decision for you, you can refer to a panoramic X-ray (OPG) plus your bite plan to check for angulation, root formation, space, and hygiene access.
What age can my child start braces treatment?
Most kids start braces around 10–14—that’s when most adult teeth (except wisdom teeth) are in and orthodontic movement is efficient.
That said, the right time to start the orthodontic process is often earlier rather than later.
Age 7–9 (first ortho check): not usually “full braces,” but screening for jaw growth issues, crossbites, severe crowding, or habits (thumb sucking/mouth breathing).
Age 8–10 (early/interceptive treatment, if needed): expanders, limited braces, or functional appliances to guide growth and prevent bigger problems later.
Age 11–14 (full braces/clear aligners): most common window for comprehensive treatment.
Age 15+ (teen braces/aligners): still very effective; sometimes more complex if growth issues were missed.
What is the best age for braces?
The best age for braces is from the age of 10 and above.
This is because of the following reasons:
- Most adult teeth have grown out;
- Starting young can make orthodontic treatment faster and easier as the tooth roots are still in a more malleable, developing stage, and the surrounding bone is less dense.
However, this does not mean that a child below 10 years of age cannot start orthodontic treatment!
There are other early orthodontic intervention tools that can be used to help guide the teeth of your child into the desired positions earlier so that they do not have to take up orthodontic treatment in the future.
Am I too old for braces?
You are never too young or old for braces! In fact, we see patients that are 55+ and above for braces treatment.
If you are considering braces treatment as a mature adult and wondering whether it might be too late for you, here are some benefits to starting:
- Improved bite and teeth alignment leading to improved oral health and hygiene;
- Decreased risk of periodontal disease and thus, loss of teeth, post-orthodontic treatment as you are able to clean between and around your teeth properly.
How do I know whether I am suitable for braces or other types of teeth straightening treatments?
Most patients are suitable for braces or other orthodontic treatments like clear aligners as long as they meet the following criterion:
- Have most of their adult teeth;
- Have optimal oral health or are willing to invest in improving their oral health;
- Have an orthodontic concern that they wish to address;
- Would like to align their bite and teeth for both aesthetic and functional purposes;
- Are ready to commit a certain budget towards their orthodontic treatment;
- Are ready to spend time to return to the clinic for regular reviews and adjustments;
- Can be compliant during the entirety of treatment;
- Maintain good oral hygiene during the course of orthodontic treatment.
Suitability for braces does not simply take into account budgetary and anatomical concerns.
As a patient, it is necessary to consider whether you are willing to be compliant and consistent throughout the course of treatment.
Would I be able to do the braces fitting on the same day of the consultation?
It is not likely that you will be able to do the braces fitting on the same day of the consultation due to time limitations.
In some cases, you might require further dental work like dental fillings, dental cleaning, tooth extractions, surgical removal of buried teeth, or even gum disease treatment before placing on your braces.
During the 1st visit (Consultation), we spend 30 – 45 minutes discussing your concerns and desired outcomes with you.
Should you wish to proceed with treatment, we also proceed with diagnostic documentation, 3D intraoral scans and photos.
If your oral health is optimal and you do not require further dental work to be done, we then schedule you for your braces fitting. This can be done on the next day if there are slots available or whenever you are available.
If you have the intention of placing your braces on the same visit as your consultation, please let us know when booking an appointment. We will contact you for an initial photo assessment of your teeth before informing you whether you are suitable for same-day braces fitting.
Can I use Medisave or CHAS to pay for braces?
Unfortunately, it is not currently possible to use your Medisave CPF or CHAS to pay for braces treatment.
Medisave can only cover surgical treatments pre-orthodontic treatment like tooth or wisdom tooth surgeries, while CHAS can only be used for general dentistry procedures such as scaling and polishing, dental fillings, or simple tooth extractions.
If your child is 12 and below, you might be able to use their CDA Baby Bonus to partially/fully pay for their braces treatment. It is also possible to use the CDA Baby Bonus of your child to pay for the treatments of their sibling(s).
If you are an adult with certain expat dental insurances, you might be pay for part or the full amount of your braces treatment with your insurer.
How do I use CDA Baby Bonus to pay for braces treatment?
If you are intending to use CDA Baby Bonus to pay for braces treatment for your child or their siblings, you will be glad to know that it is a relatively simple process!
Simply inform our team when booking your braces appointment about your intention to use CDA Baby Bonus for payment.
On the day of your appointment, bring along a copy of their birth certificate as well as the CDA Baby Bonus NETs card to make payment.
How many times do I need to return for my braces treatment?
